From Stadium to Service: NBOTB Bands Bring More Than Music

The 2025 Pepsi National Battle of the Bands (NBOTB) lit up NRG Stadium this past weekend, with eight powerhouse HBCU marching bands filling the field with precision, soul, and cultural pride.

Houston’s own Texas Southern University Ocean of Soul brought their signature maroon-and-gray swagger, reminding the hometown crowd of the artistry and energy HBCU bands carry onto every stage.

But before the lights and music, the NBOTB weekend began on a quieter, more meaningful note. On Saturday morning, the NBOTB CARES Initiative partnered with Magnificat Houses’ St. Joseph Clubhouse to host a Feeding the Homeless event. Volunteers, community leaders, and supporters came together to serve meals and share encouragement with Houston neighbors in need.

The service project reflected this year’s “Beyond the Notes” theme—showing that the bands’ impact stretches far beyond performance. At its core, the event highlighted how discipline, joy, and compassion are woven into both the HBCU marching tradition and the St. Joseph Clubhouse’s ethos of recovery through community.

A special thank-you goes out to:

  • Justyce Ayers for spearheading the project planning
  • Cracker Barrel for donating 102 meals
  • Ernest Grant with Prairie View A&M University ROTC for lending time and leadership
  • Zondra Vranes and her Albany State University student family for joining in service

Together, these partners showed that when music and mission align, the results go far beyond the stage—uplifting an entire community.
