“Getting Ahead” at RoseMary’s Place…
Recently, Getting Ahead visited RoseMary’s Place to engage residents in a transformative class. This life-changing, small-group initiative is designed to empower individuals living in or near poverty by helping them build stability, confidence, and a clear plan for their future. Over the course of several weeks, participants meet regularly in sessions led by trained facilitators, exploring both personal choices and the larger systemic factors that contribute to poverty. Through group discussions, peer support, and guided exercises, residents develop individualized action plans aimed at moving from survival mode to self-sufficiency and long-term stability. The program not only equips participants with practical tools and strategies but also fosters a sense of community and empowerment, helping them take meaningful steps toward a brighter future. Our residents enjoyed community, learning, and some delicious food!
In Houston, Getting Ahead is part of broader community efforts to promote systemic change and break the cycle of poverty.
Participants often go on to secure better jobs, improve their financial literacy, and strengthen their family and community ties. By treating participants as the “experts of their own lives,” Getting Ahead not only helps individuals plan for a better future, it fosters empowerment, dignity, and hope across the Houston community.
